Exceeding max length of 5KB

Very strange...Error loading media: File could not be played. Only occurs on Chrome incognito mode and only for certain media

We encode several movies here at different bitrates. We encounter this problem when we transcode to bitrates higher than 4k. Generally we end up with files with variable bitrates of around 5128kbps

Now, its only when these movies end up with a file size greater than 2GB that they start giving this strange error.

And once again this only happens in Google Chrome incognito mode. The player works fine in normal Chrome and in other browsers.

When we open up to play the movie. Clicking play and pause a few times (it doesn't have to be fast) but it does have to be at the beginning of the movie. The error will come back eventually

Error loading media: File could not be played.

Its almost like the player doesn't find the movie file anymore. If you scrub into the movie (say past the halfway point) then you can click play and pause (even rapidly) the error doesn't occur anymore.

So, Google Chrome incognito, over 4K bitrate, over 2GB file, play and pause, play, pause, at the start of the movie and you will see this error. Please advise as our business was going to purchase this player and deploy it in production.

PS. This is not an encoding issue as these movies play fine in other browsers / players.

This happens in both Mac and Windows Chrome incognito mode.

I believe I may have an answer.

First I tried the same video with flowplayer and I got a similar "Network Error" doing the same play/pause thing at the beginning in Chrome incognito mode. This led me to believe its not the player but Chrome incognito itself when requesting the large files (not sure why bitrate and filesize matters). But anyway, using the Chrome debugger I could see the errors coming through on the mp4 file in question. It was coming back with response: HTTP/1.1 206 Partial Content
and the content initiator was "Other" or "(from cache)". And since incognito never caches anything I think that's why the players error out ungracefully. In normal Chrome I still get the 206 errors coming through but somehow this doesn't cause the player to crash with a network error.

Strange still.

You could put up a SFW test page.
