JW6 - Audio Player Volume Horizontal Slider?

Hi,

I'm using JW6, and noticed that when the height is reduced (only controlbar for audio) that you can no longer control volume because it is beyond the boundaries of the player.

will there be a workaround introduced for this, or will horizontal sliders be available anytime soon?

Any Help appreciated ;-)

Do you have a link that demonstrates this issue?

Actually, what you are seeing is now the expected behavior. To get the full volume slider, you need to go with a full-sized player.

Ethan,

Am I correct in saying that the new version of the player that I have been looking forward to will prevent our users from adjusting the volume level when the player is used in compact mode (just the control bar) and only allow muting?

I am very disappointed with this backward step as both the set-up wizard and the documentation for JW Player 5 explain how the player can be used in this compact mode. Our entire website is built around lots of these compact players and being able to adjust the sound on them is a crucial feature for my users.

I guess our only option would be to redesign the website to allow for several full sized players being displayed on the page (at a high cost to us, and not good design). However we will probably end up cancelling our commercial licence and implementing another HTML5/Flash player instead.

Please advise,
Mark

Hi Mark,

I am assuming your license is for V5, which is for V5 only right now. You can always use the V5 player for as long as you want. We are going to continue to support V5 for a while, and are evening planning on releasing a final build of V5 (5.11), after V6 is officially released. Not every user is going to like the changes we make, but we are going to continue to support the older player/users still, and also continue to try to grow our business as a whole with newer releases/produces.

This is also a big disappointment for us. I just purchased a commercial license for v6 and was wishing to use the player for both mp3 playback and video playback separately. The horizontal volume is a must for an mp3 audio player. Why would you decide to take away such an important piece??

I can ask…

The vertical volume slider frees up space on the controlbar and is also inline with many other players out there. I also don’t think volume is that important; you also have the OS level volume controls at your disposal.

That said, you can still display the volume by making your player a bit higher (and e.g. displaying album art).

I'm also very disappointed from this. I'm using the player as a sound player and I need a volume slider!!! I can't make player higher. What can I do?! Version 5 supported it, please add this feature!!!

+1 for this, I use JW Player primarily for audio too.

Could really do with that volume control!

We recently updated from JW Player 5 to 6 on our website for all of our audio. The past few days weve had many users write in about the missing volume slider, saying their experience suffers without it. Many are wondering, as we are, why there is a mute button at all for audio files? With video, mute makes sense since there might be times where someone would play a video just for the visuals. With audio, if you dont want to hear it, you would just pause it.

Increasing the height of the player technically works, but its an inelegant solution that would take up too much vertical space. Perhaps a horizontal volume slider?

We will look into re adding the option.

Is there any timeframe as to when you'll be adding back in the volume control option for 6? On mobile we don't want the user to have a large poster image taking up all the real estate when they want to listen to audio and we want to give them the volume control for making adjustments while context changes. This is an immediate need. Please let us know how soon this will be available. Thanks!

I am not sure of the ETA, sorry!

This is not an easy fix for us. We need to update the player in two modes and all our skins. We don’t have a clear ETA yet. For now, I’d suggest sticking to JW5 if volume is important.

Do note volume controls on mobile don’t work at all, and volume on desktops is often controlled through the system volume, not the player.

+1 for a usable volume control for audio-only players.

Jeroen, you're right that users can control volume via a variety of other means, but many users aren't familiar with those controls and having something visible within the player context is helpful. Additionally, since the volume levels across recordings (or even within recordings) can vary greatly, it is often more appropriate to change the player volume than the system volume.

Yes indeed, that’s what I’d see as a use case for horizontal volume too. Another one would be when running a radio station in JW6 and turning down that volume a little compared to e.g. a Skype phone session.

Please support volume slider in JW Player 6 also if height is less than the default visible height. I also have a audio-only player and need this feature as Chris Herdt.

+1 for volume control

I also have a client that bought the license for JW Player 6. He is using this for audio and video player, and he is not willing to use audio files with an image.

It's a great player so far!

Thanks for the feedback; let me puzzle a little how a horizontal slider option could work with our skinning model.

JW Player

I need the same functionality, I'm working out a JS solution to fix it temporarily but would prefer to use native functionality. That said, even the ability to use the vertical volume control on a compact audio skin would be preferable to adding yet another plugin.

The JW player moved away from a horizontal volume slider to save space in the player which was not a good idea. Our usability folks are not too pleased with the current release (6.3) so we holding off on the update until this item is fixed. I hope we don't have to wait too long!!

Any news on adding back support for horizontal volume sliders?

This is really a problem for us, we setup radio stations for sponsorship sites, the biggest complaint we get from our clients since upgrading to version 6.3 is the inability to adjust the player's audio volume separate from the computer's main volume. I agree with the remark Trey made above, even a vertical slider is preferable to none at all.

I am a colleague of Bruce Macmillan and would like to echo his comments. I am the lead UX designer for our Digital Marketing team and the update to remove the volume control on the controlbar for version 6 has degraded the UX of the player.

For audio files, this either means having NO volume control when only the controlbar is present -OR- it forces us to include a larger, pointless screen/image (problem for mobile devices) so volume control can appear within the screen space. Neither scenario is good or desirable UX for audio files. Really hoping you will reconsider the decision to remove it. Thank you.

Thanks for the feedback – we are still looking into this. The trick is how to get this to play nice with our skinning.

Our use case for volume is really audio-only playback where volume needs controlled/dimmed because it is for “background” purposes (for e.g. online radio stations or podcasts).

Note that, for mobile, we don’t show volume ever, since that’s controlled on the side of the device (the HTML5 Volume API is in fact not implemented on iOS/Android).

Hi Jeroen,

I'm curious why the horizontal slider was taken out in the first place. It worked perfectly fine Ver 5 skins.

My company invested a lot of time and money into upgrading to Ver 6 only to find out such a basic feature has been removed.

The vertical slider takes up less space on the controlbar and is more standard – most other players use vertical.

JW Player

I guess it depends on your definition of most players, iTunes, Spotify, Rdio, as well as your own JWPlayer 5 allowed users to control the player volume independently from the system with horizontal sliders (not just mute). Sites that handle long form content and playlists like NPR and BBC Radio use horizontal volume sliders.

Looking at the old JW version 5 horizontal slider, you're really not saving any control bar real estate by going vertical. Those addition pixels can easily be absorbed by the seek bar.

Please, please, please, return the horizontal option back to the player UI. I know it sounds trivial but to those who deal with online radio stations and long form content it's a big headache.
