Secure HTTP Live Stream

Hi,

I'm interesting to test to develop a few for Apple HTTP Live Streaming to have AES decryption support with JW player. I need to secure my videos with your flash player who read .m3u8.

Why AES description is not supported ? because you aren't develop this ?

Thanks for your answer !
Best Regards,

We’re indeed not putting an effort in supporting AES decryption at this point.

The functionality is not that useful; if JW Player can decrypt and play the fragments any other tool can do so too. There’s no way to shield the keys from third-party tools or end-users.

Thanks for your answer.

But this streaming is not much more developed on the web.
I think these videos can be secured for a time before hackers developed and deploy tools for capture HTTP Live Streaming with encryption AES.
I am looking mainly to slow the download of videos with the current tools available to capture Internet users.

Can we not hide the path of the key files in the file "player.as" where are stored variables?

Then it might be better to just do unencrypted streaming. There aren’t any tools yet to glue together .TS chunks, so it’d definitely be hard for people to do a download.

Once such a tool for capturing an HLS stream becomes available, I’m positive it will include encryption too.

Yes there is still no tools to download and merge .ts the same time.

On the other side, for more experienced users:
- It is easy to see in the browser cache and find the playlist .M3U8 file, then download .ts files
- To merge .ts files, in terminal a simple command line only.

I think this video encryption option is useful for services that provide their users with security against downloading content.
If encryption AES is not cracking or difficult, it's a good selling point too, for users like me and also for JW player Licence.

But I agree with you. For the moment I think it is better to focus on small bugs encountered with HLS on flash.

Thank you!

Hi Jeroen,

i just curious if there are no plans still to add the support of AES decryption in Adaptive Provider ? This is useful for the sites with authorized access .

We have no plans to date indeed.

Thanks Jeroen ! Is there any planned release date for the Adaptive Provider itself ?

Not firm date yet, though hopefully we can deploy it as part of the 6.0 player.

Is there any positive development on AES decryption by today?
It would be useful today,

Thanks,

It is still not done, however we have it on the roadmap for 6.4 (two versions out – April 2013). We’re now specifying what should be supported and what not.

As part of this, it’ll be extremely helpful if you can provide us with an example stream – e.g. a short, 1 minute one. Can you email support [at] longtailvideo if you indeed have such a stream? Then we can add it to a suite of test files…
