JW Player 6 & iScroll Issue

I have been unable to get iScroll to work properly as demonstrated on this page:

http://developer.longtailvideo.com/player/trunk/fl5/js/test/examples/playlistiscroll.html

When I go to the URL above with iOS/Android, the scrolling seems to work fine. However, when I try to implement iScroll on my own page, I do not get the same results. When I try to scroll using iOS/Android, the scrollbar is not visible on the playlist, but it does seem to be trying to allow scrolling, when I swipe my finger across the playlist on iOS, it will scroll a little but as soon as my finger is released, the list bounces back to its original position, which in effect renders the playlist unscrollable.

Perhaps I am missing something, I was under the impression that the only thing I had to do was include the iScroll .js file in my header which I have done, is there more to it than this?

Here is my URL: http://www.flipmediasd.com/test2

For JW6, the iScroll library is not needed anymore. On the other hand, inclusion should not break scrolling. We’ll take a look at this.

Okay, I was unaware that iScroll was not needed, but the reason I implemented it in the first place was due to scrolling not working on mobile devices.

I have 2 different devices I am checking right now, the first is an EVO 4G running Android 2.3.5. When I load the page on this device the scroll bar is visible, but the list is not scrollable. The second is a 1st generation iPad, the iPad is where I run into the issue of the list bouncing back to its original position every time I try to scroll it.

I also have the latest generation iPad I'll be testing once it gets here.

This project is for a client that will be purchasing JWPlayer once it has proven to work, and right now this playlist issue is the only thing standing in the way of that. As such is it possible I can get e-mail or phone support regarding this matter?

Quick update: tested with latest generation iPad. Results are same as android. Scroll bar is visible, but list is not scrollable.

Shoot, you are right. That’s a bug on our end:

http://developer.longtailvideo.com/trac/ticket/1818

Unfortunately, that’s hard to fix at present. We’re working on a number of other fixes, and this one seems quite difficult to tackle.

Is it possible for you to use the 5.10 player at present, until the issue is fixed in JW6?

Thanks for getting to the bottom of this. I'll try to use 5.10, but is the JavaScript API the same for 5.1 as it is for 6? Just curious, because I've coded a lot of custom features on my video pages that uses the API.

I also noticed that on the link you provided, it is listed as an enhancement, not a bug. But if the scrolling is not functional on any mobile device, with or without iScroll... isn't that a bug? Food for thought.

Thanks again for assisting me with this.

The scrollbar next to the list can still be used for scrolling, so that’s why it’s not an outright “bug”.

The 5.x and 6.x API are really the same. The only thing we did was add a few classes to JW6 (Controls, Quality),

I've found related problems on IOS for jwplayer 5 vs 6

I'm not sure if you perhaps read:
http://www.longtailvideo.com/support/forums/jw-player/bug-reports/29775/repeat-button-in-ios-not-working

Ethan Longtail was helping me and pointed me to this thread.

On IOS with jwplayer 5 no Issues:
http://research.mustbe.nl/iscroll/?link=20121114fc419a

On IOS with jwplayer 6:
http://research.mustbe.nl/iscrollv2/?link=20121114fc419a

1. Repeat button problem on IOS, After playing all items the repeat button doesn't work..
2. iScroll doesn't work immediately. It only works after you rotate your IOS device...

Hope this helps solving this.
Kind regards
Marc Otten

Both issues are confirmed and ticketed:

http://developer.longtailvideo.com/trac/ticket/1818
http://developer.longtailvideo.com/trac/ticket/1859

We have not fixed them yet, but since they are bugs they are part of the short-term todo list.

Note we’re probably going to build something that’s scroll-method agnostic for the playlist.

This may be a bug again, since the playlist slider doesn't work on JW6 within a modal box (such as fancybox) on iOS devices (and possibly other mobile devices).

As a result, I'm left without any way to scroll my playlist on an iPad. Also tried adding iScroll with no luck.

Any other ways around this?

I tried to add a comment to the ticket, but that didn't seem to be possible:

Same problem here. Would happily use iScroll or a slider or anything if it actually worked but none of it does.

We are holding up the roll out of a new Wowza server over this because we cannot support HLS under JW5.

Your last post was 2013-02-13.
Wondered if the scroll issue is making progress?
If not can I use the same setup with 5.1 without changing embed codes?
Tried to embed for iPad several times with no luck but since JWP 6 it worked.
Uh...without being able to scroll the playlist.

I'm sorry if this is off topic. But struggling with JW5 again.
For some reason I never can get an iPad version and a flash version to work with playlist and JWP 5
All working fine on the Mac with swfobject but not on iPad.
If I follow the start guide of JW Player 5 I get a working playlist on iPad but not on the Mac.

JWP 6 was working for the first time for me on both although I miss my share plugin and color settings.
So I hope you wizards can solve things with the scrolling.

I can wait but if you find some time...here you can see my humble test...not working(again).

Got it working with jw5! But not smooth.
One thing: H264 with AAC on iPad is not the same as in Safari or Firefox?
What are the exact specs for iPad AND pc for mp4 and jw5?

It works for me?

JW Player

It appeared during testing that some .mp4 files were working on iPad but not on Mac. But the thing that is working...: I got a playlist(never had that before on iPad) and scrollable on both iOS and Mac. Tried some configuration I presume I didn't try before. Hope to be any clearer now about 'works for me' now?

So I shoot a .mov and run Compressor(Apple) to get .mp4 but .mp4 is not .mp4 for all platforms?

video 1 & 2 are both taken from the same .mov source and both converted to mp4 but with different quality settings. On the iPad 2 only the second will play.

Strange enough not on my iPad.
If possible I would've send you a screendump for proof.
Anyway, I'll just go on with the lower quality setings.
Kind regards.

Ethan, just to be clear ... your "Works for me" is referring to Marc's (highly offtopic) issues with encoding mp4 files, right?

I have a Wowza/JW6 project here that has been twiddling it's thumbs for over a month now waiting on this scrolling bug and would hate to see it get written off as working.

Future release? as in JW7?

I don't care if it is iScroll or not, just need some kind of (working) scrolling playlist for iPad users ASAP.

I would also like to get an idea when this will be fixed. We are just about to go to our VP and ask him to purchase JW Player so that we can have our users watch a series of videos about "How to use your new iPad". If it is not within the next week, well I guess that we will have to find a different product to play our videos.

Hi

I've just updated my JW HTML Config library to include the following features:

<ul>
<li>iScroll single finger scrolling for JW6 playlists on iOS (tested on iPad 1 iOS 5.1.1 & iPhone 4GS iOS 5.1.1)</li>
<li>Auto-pause all other JW Players on a page when selecting a video to play</li>
</ul>

Full documentation is in the pipeline - I have provided a playlist code example under "Documentation > Playlist Setup > JW6".

Might be of interest for those in need of iScroll functionality: http://powered-by-haiku.co.uk/?p=189

Thanks a lot indeed! We’re going to add single-finger scrolling in JW Player 6.5 and this code may be useful.

JW Player

@Jeroen

Taking account of the fact that some people prefer to stick with the JavaScript embed approach, and that the iScroll fix is not likely to hit JW Player until JW6.5, I've extracted the feature from my JW HTML Config library and made it available as a standalone library - which can now easily be integrated into existing JS embeds.

You can find more details here: http://powered-by-haiku.co.uk/?p=469

We love to get this stuff out ASAP, but there’s just so much to work on in the player still. And we’re up to 4 persons full-time these days. It’s a little crazy ;)
