iOS: Could not be loaded, either because the server or network failed or because the format is not supported

Hi,

I'm using trunk version (5.9) of jwplayer and am running into a problem when I try to play audio on an iphone. I get a message saying that it "could not be loaded, either because the server or network failed or because the format is not supported"

When I load the same file in chrome on a desktop, things play fine. Firefox does not play it, however. The audio files are mp3's.

My test page is available at http://dmbstream.com/longtailtest1.html.

Am I missing something in the playlist feed?

Thanks,

Jim

It looks like this has to do with the bitrate of the mp3 files. The ones that were not loading correctly were VBR V0. Seems that there is less of a problem playing them if they're worse quality.

If anyone has any other info related to this, I'm interested. I've taken down the test page since I got things working.

Interesting. Here is a sample mp3 file that you can use as a template.

Thanks Ethan,

To try to narrow things down, I created a page with a bunch of audio tags on it. I played around with content types and sources. Ultimately, iOS didn't load the V0 mp3's regardless of the content type. So it's not an issue with jwplayer, but rather has to do with safari's vbr mp3 support.

@Willie I tested it with an iPhone 4s running 5.0.1

I wish I can be of more help, but cannot as I don't have an iPhone or even an iPAD.

I do have on my system Safari 5.1..2 (windows) and believe that IF it works here then it should logically works on the iPhone and iPAD.
Yet, my way of thinking may be totally wrong here and I have been wrong in the past.

If my web site does work on either I'd love to have a screenshot from each just.

I simply use http://iphonetester.com/ to test for iPhone and with
http://ipadpeek.com/ to test for IPAD but its not the same.

Willie – If you have a Mac you can download XCode for free and it has an iOS simulator.
