Android 3.1 html5 video (Galaxy Tab 10.1) Problem

Hi there,

I don't know if it is a Android 3.1 issue. But html5 video on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is not working.

It states that the video is only one second long and only plays one second.

At first i tought it was a problem with the jwplayer wordpress plugin. But the demo video on the longtailvideo.com site gives the same result.
http://www.longtailvideo.com/players/ Only one second is played and stated as the length of the video in the player.

Hope someone can confirm/fix this?

Regards,
Rolf

We don’t currently have a Honeycomb tablet to test this on, but we’re working on it.

I’ll update this thread when we investigate further.

@Rolf -

I have confirmed this bug and created a ticket to address it in the next release of the player:

http://developer.longtailvideo.com/trac/ticket/1472

It concerns auto-detected durations on Android 3.x with the player running in HTML5 mode. If Flash is enabled on the tablet, the player works fine in Flash mode.

On Galaxy Nexus Android 4.0.1 I am having the same duration detection problem with html5. The video plays for 1 second and stops. The flash version works fine, but I would prefer html5. Thanks!

Thanks for the update. We haven’t yet tested Ice Cream Sandwich, since it’s so recent. I’ve re-opened the ticket.

Same problem on Jelly Bean (Nexus s -Android 4.1.1) and Galaxy tab 10.1 ( android 4.0.4 ).
I have check duration by getDuration() on onPlay event and return 1 second.
If i force durantion in player configuration the video play correctly.
If you need other test, ask me.

Not every Android supports m3u8, and m3u8 won’t work in Flash.

My android device support m3u8 very well.
The m3u8 direct link work and if i write a basic html5 page with video tag but without jwplayer the video play correctly.
The video stop to work beacuse jwplayer script calculate bad duration.
Is not a device m3u8 support problem.

Sorry, the Galaxy Tab is a slightly older device, it is on 4.0 ICS. It works though.

Lucky to find this thread. Hopefully I'm not hijacking it, just to add on some of my testing as well.

1. WIth Flash installed on the device running 4.1.1 - Jelly Bean: Loads and played the flash file. Code is configure with Flash and HTML5 using m3u8
2. Once Flash removed (reseted the device to factory default) running 4.1.1 - Jelly Bean: Loading the same page as item 1, does not work, fallback to HTML5 does not play the m3u8 file. Then, created a html page using the video tag and it plays the m3u8 file.
3. Using another device running 4.0.4 (NO Flash installed), loads page mentioned in item 1, plays the m3u8 file.

*all these using default browser.
*tested the link http://developer.longtailvideo.com/player/trunk/fl5/js/test/examples/m3u8.html does not work on 4.1.1
*same as mention by the rest above posting, only 1 sec and then stops

Same problem on Samsung Galaxy S III Phone using the default, built-in browser...
Above test Link:
http://developer.longtailvideo.com/player/trunk/fl5/js/test/examples/m3u8.html

The test video plays for ~ 1 second - shows the disclaimer, and then video stops and displays image of the big bunny.

This Samsung device is running OS Android Ver 4.0.4

I just purchased this phone yesterday to get this HTML5 thingy to work, and have not installed any apps (no flash player).

Should I try V6? Any other ideas?

JW Player

User

Also, I am able to reliably play my own m3u8 live stream by typing the URL straight into the phone's generic browser. When I hit "go," i am prompted by phone to pick "video player" a generic looking (not flash) icon, or "Internet" with a world icon. I pick video player and it plays my live stream, served through a Wowza media server. The video is full screen with audio, for ~ an hour, so far.

The phone is connected wifi on my home-office-wireless router, comcast.net. We are going out to media server and back down. Speed is currently 1.5mbps down, 4.06mbps upload. The stream is 248 kbps (w/aac audio encoder set to stereo 48 kbps).

streaming the m3u8 on it's own works fine. When it's embedded in the JW Player... it plays my same stream for about a second, and then it stops. I will try v6, and report...

That worked. Thank you. I now have the v6 streaming flash live from Flash Encoder (v3.2) through a Wowza media server using the .mp4.

I can still play the standalone m3u8 URL in the Gallaxy's video player, as before..

But now when I load the URL with the embedded jwplayer (v6) I get the background image with an arrow/circle in the middle (so far so go). I press on the arrow and it turns for less than a second and then the spinning arrow image freezes on top of background image. I never get to see any of my video now. The background image stays, and locks.

If I press the browser refresh, it reloads the page, but pressing the button does not work. If I leave it alone, it eventually returns itself back to the email that I clicked on to launch the URL link.

http://www.atlantaentertainment.com/live/jw6.htm

What do you think?

JW Player

User
0 rated :

I wish to correct that last sentence. After it page locks, the refresh will sometimes return a new image/arrow deal, and it will let you repeat the lock up, and sometimes when you repress the arrow, the player seems to enlarge the background image, like trying to go into full screen or something, and then press it again, and it does the half spin and sticks, freezes.

Remember, these problems are occurring on my new Galaxy III S (phone) running the Android version 4.0.4. I picked this one up at Verizon on Saturday, and have not loaded any apps.

Have I codded it correctly? Do you have any ideas or suggestions?

Can you try the latest tag of V6?

I believe I have build .2813 installed, tested... Here is my report.

The flash still works on the desktop, but when I load the same page on the Gallaxy S III (to run HTML5), JW player does not spin or anything else, it just shows the background image with arrow. When you press the arrow, it sometimes enlarges the background image, and then press arrow again, and the image shrinks to original size. That's all it does... no streaming.

Note, I now see the "JW Player" on right above the image. That has also changed from build .2449 that I was testing with before.

My test link:
http://www.atlantaentertainment.com/live/jw6.htm
should work through tonight.

Any ideas?

JW Player

User

Update. It started working. I am not sending audio to my test stream tonight, just video... and the video is playing well on the Gallaxy 3 III.

JW Player

But I could only make it work just once.

Now, pressing arrow just makes image larger, then smaller... and I cannot get it to stream video again...

Android 4.0.1 I believe.

No Flash.

Since it played once, maybe you should try to reboot your device, or clear it’s cache? It could be something along those lines.

I'm seeing this same issue with Android 4.0.4 on a Galaxy SIII running CM9.

Playback of M3U8s using JW is inconsistent but generally non-functioning. I've confirmed this with 5.9 and 6.

Using a basic video tag is flawless.

Yup, this page does it:

http://developer.longtailvideo.com/player/trunk/fl5/js/test/examples/m3u8.html

And I've separately tested that same media and other known good m3u8's under JW6 without success.

I've also confirmed stock AT&T 4.0.4 firmware on the S3 shows the issue in addition to CM9. CM10 which is based on 4.1.1 seemed to work.

You can test it here – http://www.longtailvideo.com/support/jw-player-setup-wizard

Yup I've tried that.

If I tap play once it does nothing. If I tap a few times I can get it to play audio but video doesn't start, the preview image stays there.

Under JW5 the A/V start playing, I see video for a second then it goes back to the preview.

HLS on Android is indeed petty much broken:

http://www.longtailvideo.com/blog/30049/jan-ozer-interviews-jw-on-apple-hls-and-mpeg-dash

We’re going to ensure HLS streams will not get loaded across the board on Android. That way, you can serve a progressive MP4 as fallback.

JW Player

User
0 rated :

Thanks Jeroen, I bumped into that article while researching the state of HLS on Android.

I will note that YouTube uses HLS to deliver live events to Android 4.0.4 and 4.1 (based on useragent) and that these work on my S3 where JW5/JW6 do not.

Dropping support to allow fallback sounds fine for on-demand programming but in a live setting the fallback needs to be to RTSP can be equally problematic.

It would be nice to have the option to deliver HLS Android versions we know work with it, as YouTube seems to. Obviously they have some advantage with inside knowledge about the true state of support.

JeroenW

JW Player Support Agent
0 rated :

I’m not sure how YouTube does this (or if they tested this enough), but we have very simple reproducible error cases that use a <video> tag and not JW Player.

As for falling back, that’s going to be possible with 6.1. You can do the following:

1) Setup a <div> that contains a link to the RTSP stream (which is picked up on Android)
2) Load JW Player in this div, using an HLS stream and the “fallback” option set “false”.

On desktops and iOS, the HLS stream will play in JW Player. On Android, the link to the RTSP stream will be available.

I just purchased a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and am having problems playing videos off of websites. This seems very strange since it would seem that this device is primarily a media oriented system.... I keep thinking that there must be something I am doing wrong, since this is my first Android experience... but I got a Samsung Galaxy phone at the same time and it won't play videos either.. youtube is fine, but not videos from other websites. Sure would love to have someone tell me how to correct this since I primarily want these phones and tab to do business presentations in a face to face environment without dragging out my laptop.... worthless without video capability.
