Windows 8 / IE 10 JW Player not loading.

Hi, I have a bit of a strange issue.

I have JW Player set up on my website. The player works fine in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and most versions of IE. However, there appears to be an issue.

System Configuration:
Windows 8
IE 10 (in full screen mode)

The flash player never appears to get loaded. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem?

Follow-up:

The player loads and plays the video just fine when IE10 is in "desktop" mode. It seems the problem is with IE10 being in full screen mode.

I do but it is NSFW stuff and is behind a protected directory. If you don't mind the nature of the content I'll be more than happy to email you a link along with credentials to log in.

I'm seeing the same thing, the player works fine in every browser including IE10, *except* when using IE10 in full screen mode.

Interestingly, the issue does indeed happen on your gallery page, but not on all pages. Again all pages work when IE10 is in desktop mode, but in full screen mode I see the videos on this page fail:

However, this one works:

The gallery uses YouTube as the source, perhaps that is the issue?

Can you reproduce the issue on your end? Does the JWplayer gallery work for you in the full screen mode of IE10?

The page on my site (http://www.supersaas.com/info/demos) does not use YouTube and exhibits it as well.

I will have to get my hands on a Win8 machine to test, so I don’t have that OS to test on, it works fine in Win7 though. Is Win8/IE8 out of beta?

JW Player

I don't think you can install IE10 on Windows 7?? Yes, the first machines with Windows 8 and IE10 pre-installed are in the hands of consumers, although Microsoft has not yet released the Windows 8 upgrade / standalone version so you need the beta to test it.

Yes, so we need a machine to test it. Yes, we haven’t tested since it isn’t even out of beta yet.

IE10 came out of beta on August 15, the RTM version is already used on new PCs in the hands of consumers. I just meant that you can download the beta for free from Microsoft site so you don't need a new machine to test it.

"...only sites that are listed in the Flash section of the Compatibility View (CV) list can play Flash content within Metro style IE."(http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ie/archive/2012/06/22/developer-guidance-for-web-sites-with-flash-content-in-windows-8.aspx)

Is JW player going to submit jw5 or 6 on microsoft Compatibility View (CV)? Here is the site to submit(http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ie/jj193557(v=vs.85).aspx)! We would really appreciate if we could play jw players on new upcoming windows8 phone and tablets using IE10 Metro. Then JW players could be played on ipad, android tab, and windows8 metro pad/tabs etc! Thanks!

But there are some bugs with it. My testing, my web page does not work (like to get it fixed!) http://www.nvsi.com flow does not work and the first video plays in the play list, but there is no video only audio.

But I have a test page working at http://www.180lake.com that does work.

The metro now called start screen version of internet explorer is supposed to not allow addons and claims to have flash. Its also html 5 although not sure exactly what that means as microsofts versions are usually slightly different than everyone else's.

Hi, I've been having roughly the same problem: jwplayer videos either take a long time to load or just freeze up the browser on IE10 (both versions!!) on Windows 8.
It works on FF and on Windows Phone 7.5, and I imagine on iOS devices.
Curiously, the problem seems to be only with recently encoded Handbrake videos and only on IE10.
Here's a link:
http://agnespoirier.fr/jsdlnologo.html

Earlier encoded videos, like this one, work fine on IE10.

I found a link that explains why what's going on: Windows 8 blocks flash on IE10 only on some sites *only in fullscreen*, based on a whitelist. This explains why, for JW Player 5 on my site, it would break for me while other sites still worked.

http://betanews.com/2012/11/06/add-internet-explorer-10-flash-support-for-any-domain-on-windows-8/

I'm not sure if JW Player 6 can fall back to HTML5 video if it detects this particular flash block. I couldn't get JM Player 6 to work reliably on IE7, which I need, so I gave up on that. For now, it seems the only option is getting your site whitelisted by Microsoft.

Replying to myself here: Making HTML video playback the preferred playback option probably circumvents the issue.

I tested it on two different Windows 8 version in a VM (on a Mac but I doubt that's an issue) but it would be great if someone else can confirm whether or not the jwplayer home page works for them on a PC.

Note that the player does not have any issues going full screen, the problem is that the player won't work in the full screen version of IE10. This is the default version of IE10 that most people will be using with Windows 8. (see the link earlier that explains there are two version of IE10 that are entirely different executables).

Ethan Feldman

That might be an issue. Using VM doesn’t always give you a totally accurate experience. We have test Win8 machines here which work fine.

JW Player

So the JW Player home page works in the *full screen version* of IE10 on your WIn8 machines?

http://www.longtailvideo.com/jw-player/

It keeps saying "Error loading media: File could not be played" when I try it.

I haven't heard of any compatibility issues with this VM so far, and I don't understand how that could affect just this one program, but if it works for you then I'll have to find a Win8 machine of my own to verify it.

Ethan Feldman

JW Player Support Agent
0 rated :

Yes, that link works fine. It plays in fullscreen mode.

JW Player

User
0 rated :

Just double checking you understand: There is nothing wrong with the fullscreen mode of JW Player, there are two versions of IE10 supplied with Windows 8, one of which is in the "Metro" interface and does not allow flash, this one is referred to as the _fullscreen version of IE10_. So you would need to actually tun that version from Metro interface, just switching regular IE10 to full screen is not enough.

I've experienced the same Windows 8 IE 10 "okay on desktop, doesn't work in full screen." Please check out this page:

http://pkp.cc/19741

That will bring you to a page where it happens. On the desktop it shows the smaller player (the size I've set) and works. In the full screen mode it shows a larger square, and pressing play results in a download dialogue. (I do believe I have it configured to provide the download if the player initialization fails.)

Thanks,

If I go directly to the amazonS3 link to the video, I get the "download or play?" dialog.

Hi Ethan,
It would seem highly unpractical that every site with JW Player registers with Microsoft to disable the Flash block, especially now that Flash really isn't needed anymore for JW Player.

It would seem much more sensible if you could fix JW Player to use HTML5 video in the IE 10 Metro version, just like JW Player does on the desktop version of IE10.

I resolved my issue IE10, trying to play a .mov file. Hopefully this will help someone else.

So the issue is that IE10 doesn't have a lot of support for flash. JWPlayer tries to play the video up using HTML5. Since HTML5 doesn't support .mov files, it didn't work.

Since the encoding is similar in mov and mp4 files I simply renamed the .mov file to .mp4 and it worked.
