Closed captions on Youtube "Unsupported" - Which captions are unsupported? WebVTT or Youtube CC's?

On the Closed Captions support page, it is stated that "captions are not supported when using Youtube content."
Does this mean that loading WebVTT files on top of a Youtube video is unsupported, or that closed captions cannot be loaded from Youtube?
The reason I ask is because we were loading WebVTT files over a youtube video on the v7.3.4 player without issue, but having upgraded to 7.12.8 WebVTT captions no longer work over Youtube videos.
Can anybody clear this up?
