captions not working

I am using an old version of the jwplayer 5.3 I think and we encode files using a caption .srt file directly embedding them into the video. the player will display the captions, but when we test this in the new jwplayer the captions will not display. Can captions be embedded directly into the video without a separate file being uploaded to the server??

thank you for your response. here is a link to the test site: http://www.fox8tv.com/jwplayer/testing/

the file that is playing has captions embedded into the video not as a separate file.

I am preparing to migrate from the old player to the new player and before investing I need to make sure captions will work for us.

Hi Mike,

You would need to be using HLS in order to embed the captions within the video. As you’re using MP4s I would recommend sideloading VTTs since they are compatible with iOS devices.

Why does jwplayer 5.3 display captions in mp4 files and not the new player? are you saying that the new player will not show captions at all on mp4 or any other static file format with captions embedded?? Why did the new player move away from display of embedded captions?

It’s not supported in an HTML5 video tag, or aligned with FCC accessibility standards. You can read more below:
