Play and Complete actions are not showing correct Label in GA

Hi JwPlayer Team
We have implemented JWplayer 6.12 to capture Google Analytics for video Play, Complete, Pause, Buffer action etc for the below url
http://www.tcs.com/consulting/client-successes/Pages/Tata-Sky-Customer-Satisfaction-Service-Excellence-test-for-new-video-server.aspx

It is showing Video file (http://multimedia.tcs.com/media/client_videos/TCS_TATASky_Testimonial.m4v) url for Pause and buffer action in Event Label which is correct, but for Play and Complete action it is showing the Page url (http://www.tcs.com/consulting/client-successes/Pages/Tata-Sky-Customer-Satisfaction-Service-Excellence-test-for-new-video-server.aspx) in the Event Label which is wrong

Please see the view source of the http://www.tcs.com/consulting/client-successes/Pages/Tata-Sky-Customer-Satisfaction-Service-Excellence-test-for-new-video-server.aspx and let me know the fix

Thanks

Hi Prashant,

My name is Alex and I am one of the Team Leads of the Support Team at JW Player. I will be more than happy to assist you with your questions.

I am able to see the behavior in JW 6 where the pings are being sent to Google Analytics showing the URL of the page the player is being embedded on for the Plays and Completes events, instead of the URL of the file being played.

However, the Google Analytics events sent by JW Player 7 are correctly showing the URL of the file being played for all events.

I would recommend upgrading to JW Player 7. If, for some reason, you are unable to do so, you can alternatively disable the built-in Google Analytics integration of the player and instead send the events to GA manually using the player’s API events. You can find out how to do this on our developer site.

Please let me know if you need any more help or have any other questions.

Thank you!

Hi Alex
We can not upgrade to JW 7 as it is not supported for IE8 etc
Can you please check the behavior in http://www.tcs.com/industries/life-sciences/Pages/default.aspx and http://www.tcs.com/industries/manufacturing/Pages/default.aspx
for Play, Complete, Pause and buffer. I think here it is working for all the 4 events as desired (showing the video file name)..

If so then then please let me know the reason why it not working for http://www.tcs.com/consulting/client-successes/Pages/Tata-Sky-Customer-Satisfaction-Service-Excellence-test-for-new-video-server.aspx having the similar code except the video is coming from different server

Hi Prashant,

In looking at the network traffic for all three of those pages, the play events all being sent with the video file URL:

I’m pretty sure I did see the page URL being sent with the Play event yesterday, but today I am not seeing that behavior. Did you make any changes in the configuration of the third page above since I looked at it yesterday?

Hi Alex

I have not made any changes in the configuration.

On my Google Analytics Account, I am seeing three Event Category

JWplayer Video (Consists of 6 Actions Buffer,Pause,Play,Seek,Resume,Complete)
JW Player Video Plays
JW Player Video Completes

Can we get rid of additional JW Player Video Plays and JW Player Video Completes category as those actions are already covered in JWplayer Video Event Category

Please correct if I am wrong. That is causing the confusion.

Hi Prashant,

With JW Player 6, analytics were sent to Google Analytics with two different event categories – JW Player Video Plays and JW Player Video Completes. In JW Player 7, we changed this functionality to report all of the events in one event category – JW Player Video. It’s possible that the events you are seeing under the JW Player Video event category was when you may have been testing with JW Player 7.

There would be two options to make the analytic events all be reported under JW Player Video:

1. Upgrade to JW Player 7
2. If you need to remain with JW 6, you can not use the built-in Google Analytics integration and send the metrics to GA yourself using events from the JavaScript API and send them with the ga(‘send’) method from Google Analytics. You can find more about how to do this on our Analytics Integration page of our Developer Site.

Thank you.

Hi Alex
We have tested JW 7 player for only one page in Nov -2015, but it is showing video url in JwPlayer EventCategory even in this month (211 video url in play 110 video comple in this month also), Please suggest if it is not supported in Jwplayer 6.12 then how it is coming ??

As per your suggestion, We can not upgrade to JW 7 as it is not supported for IE8 etc
Is option valid 2 mentioned above valid with Jwplayer 6.12 ?

Is it possible for you to discuss this issue over webex and phone also ?

Thanks
Prashant

Prashant,

Unfortunately, I wouldn’t be able to know where the events sent to your Google Analytics environment would be coming from. What I mentioned before about JW 7 events going to the “JW Player Video” event category and the JW 6 events going to the “JW Player Video Plays” and “JW Player Video Completes” categories is my understanding of the behavior of our Google Analytics integration and it was confirmed to me yesterday by one of our Product Managers.

As for option #2, you should be able to do that just fine with JW Player 6.

I also want to advise you that while it is completely up to you if you want to continue using JW Player 6, we still stop being able to provide support for that version at the end of this year, which would be 18 months after the release of JW Player 7.

Finally, just so you know, we do not offer phone and/or video conference support as part of our normal scope of support.

Please let me know if you need any more help or have any other questions.

Thank you!
