Poor video quality

I am new to this. I've noticed that my videos, while viewing them on my computer before uploading them to my free JWPlayer account, look very clear, but after I upload them, the quality changes quite a bit - the pictures are almost fuzzy and of poor quality.

Am I doing something wrong? I wonder - when I make them on my computer and go to save them, my program compresses them when it makes them into the mp4 format. Is JWPlayer also compressing them when I upload them? Should I not be compressing them first before uploading?

A concern though...if I shouldn't be compressing them beforehand, I wonder how long it will take to upload then? It already takes a very long time for a 1-2 minute video.

Can anyone give me some tips?

Hi Cathy,

Could you show us an example of where you are posting your videos so we can see how you are embedding them?

Hi Donni, Here is the link to a site that I park my videos on:

http://nw-wi-property-tours.com/

I make a video, then upload to my free JWPlayer. I then copy the code and place in a page I made for each video. The links are all on that main page.

To display the video, I didn't choose one of the three pre-made players, but instead made a player with slightly larger dimensions to accommodate the same size the videos can be displayed through our MLS service. Not sure if that changes the quality....

Hi Cathy,

First off, the timeline is distorted on your player. You can fix this by putting <!DOCTYPE html> instead of <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> at the top of your page.

While I see there is an “HD” button indicating that there are higher quality versions of your video available to player, even when choosing the highest quality made available it still looks blurry. I would suggest uploading a higher quality version of the file and then creating a manual embed that points directly to the higher quality encoding. Additionally, you could the javascript API to have the player get the current quality and switch to a higher quality (once you’ve uploaded a higher quality video).

A final option to consider, if you’d prefer to stick just having to copy and paste the embed code from the Publish-Mode in the JW Dashboard is to upload a higher quality version of the video (should be about twice the size of the file you have uploaded now) and purchase a Premium subscription. This will make all of your single-line embeds utilize HLS adaptive streaming and automatically adjsut the quality of the videos based on the size of the player and the speed of the internet connection of the user.

Hi Donni, I've read thru your notes - I'll have to take a closer look later when I can sit down and concentrate on your suggestions. I'm pretty new to this stuff, so its got to 'digest' a bit. Thanks for the help, and I"ll figure it out over the weekend.....
