Why does the JW Player need Flash for streaming?

There are players like https://www.theoplayer.com/ or https://github.com/dailymotion/hls.js that allow HLS streaming purely with open standards rather than requiring Flash. Facebook is presenting its videos via streaming without Flash as well and iOS devices simply wouldn't be able to play HLS streaming videos with JW Player, as no Flash is available.

Is some non-Flash HLS playback in the works at JW Player, or do we need to have a look at eg. THEOplayer for now?

Thank you for reaching out to support. We understand the need to have an HLS solution that is not dependent on Flash. Our engineers are actively working on an implementation method with our player that does not require the use of a Flash provider. We anticipate having this release go live sometime in Q1 of 2016. You can also check our release notes section which highlights various implementations across our player releases: http://support.jwplayer.com/customer/portal/articles/1403726-jw-player-7-release-notes .
